A 35-year-old Web3 founder sat down in my home in LA two days ago and asked me one question: "Ken, can I use a Vanuatu passport to fix my European travel for the next round of investor meetings?"
I asked him to put the bottle of water down and listen to three sentences.
One: as of May 2026, a Vanuatu passport will not get you visa-free into Schengen. Two: it will not get you visa-free into the UK either. Three: the visa-free privileges this passport has lost over the past three years are not coming back on a 6-12 month timeline.
I have spent 11 years on CBI work and signed off 300+ approvals. I have filed Vanuatu cases. I have approved Vanuatu cases. I have also turned Vanuatu cases away. Today's piece lays out what this passport actually does in 2026 – which is not what most agents are still selling. Web3 founders read this carefully before swiping a $130K wire.
As of May 2026, the Vanuatu CBI program (formally the Development Support Program / DSP) sits in a different place than it did in 2021. A few timestamps tell the story.
In 2022 the European Union suspended Vanuatu's Schengen visa waiver over due-diligence concerns. On December 12, 2024, the EU Council formally removed Vanuatu from the Schengen visa-exempt list. Every Vanuatu citizen today must obtain a Schengen visa before entering the EU. In July 2023, the UK government withdrew its visa-free access for Vanuatu passport holders, in parallel with the same move against Dominica.
Those two privileges were the largest reasons HNW clients picked Vanuatu in the past. Both are gone.
The Vanuatu government has been overhauling the due-diligence flow since 2024 to align with EU compliance demands. The direction is the right one. The diplomatic timeline for restoring visa-free, however, is not on a public schedule.
So the real Vanuatu pitch in 2026 is the three-piece set: low entry ($130K minimum), fast processing (4-6 months, not the 30-day myth), and a fully remote process. The visa-free list shrank to roughly 95 countries on paper. The portion that maps to actual HNW travel is closer to 40-50.
I split Web3 founders' real needs into three buckets.
Bucket 1: European events, investor roadshows, conference travel. Vanuatu does not solve this. Token2049 London, Web Summit Lisbon, ETHCC Brussels – with a Vanuatu passport you still need a Schengen visa and a UK visitor visa. Saint Kitts ($250K) or Antigua ($230K) is what this bucket needs. Schengen plus UK 180 days .
Bucket 2: Risk isolation around the original mainland Chinese passport, plus a compliant identity layer for offshore banking. Vanuatu can do this, but it is not the optimal pick. São Tomé at $95K does the same job and starts from a cleaner due-diligence reputation. Vanuatu's only edge here is the older, more familiar processing pipeline.
Bucket 3: Genuine emergency. Original passport compromised, frozen, or unusable. Need a flight-eligible second document in 60-180 days. This is where Vanuatu earns its keep. The pitch is not "an upgrade." The pitch is "you have something to fly with."
I tell every client the same line: not the most expensive, not the cheapest, only the most appropriate. For most Web3 founders, Vanuatu is not the appropriate one. Unless you are already in bucket 3.

A Web3 founder, 35, active in NFT and DeFi since 2018. Mid-to-upper assets distributed across multiple OTC channels. He came to me in March looking for "the fastest second passport that solves European travel."
Ken's call: not Vanuatu. I walked him through the three events on his calendar: Token2049 London, Web Summit Lisbon, ETHCC. Vanuatu would require a visa for all three. His real need was Schengen + UK access. That is Saint Kitts ($250K) or Antigua ($230K). I steered him to Antigua: family-of-four math, the UK 180-day match for his investor-meeting cadence, and clean Schengen visa-free at issuance.
An agent who would have closed the Vanuatu sale on his original ask was not protecting his real need. They were protecting the $130K commission.
If you finished this and you are still juggling 9 passports, that is normal. We built a 26-page 2026 Decision Map for the 9 CBI Passports – four-axis flowchart (budget, goal, timeline, family), 5-dimension scoring per passport, real total-cost breakdowns, and 7 common pitfalls.

A: No. The EU Council formally removed Vanuatu from the Schengen visa-exempt list on December 12, 2024. Every holder must apply for a Schengen visa before entering the EU. There is no public restoration timeline within the next 6-12 months.
A: No. As of May 2026, real processing time is 4-6 months. Any agent quoting 30-60 days is using pre-2022 numbers. I have not seen a sub-60-day Vanuatu issuance in the post-overhaul period.
A: It is theoretically possible. In practice it is hard. Vanuatu flags as a high-sensitivity jurisdiction at major Western banks and compliant exchanges, with rejection rates above Saint Kitts and Antigua. If account opening is your primary use case, look at Saint Kitts.
A: When the original passport is compromised or unusable, when a 60-180 day flight-eligible document is the emergency need, and when Schengen and UK access are not on the requirement list. Outside that scenario, Saint Kitts, Antigua, or São Tomé are the better starting points.
